A rattle that sounded like a loose heat shield

M3Post member vsix returned to an earlier exhaust-rattle discussion with his reported solution. Members had suggested replacing the muffler section or checking the heat shields. He said the muffler, which he described as a Helmholtz-chamber muffler, had developed tiny, hard-to-see cracks along the OEM welds on its upper side. He attributed the heat-shield-like sound to vibration at those cracks.

Removing the exhaust made the small cracks visible

In his follow-up, vsix said he and his welder removed the exhaust and initially could not find the cause. They then noticed the fine cracks and welded them closed. He reported that the exhaust sounded normal again and that an annoying buzz had also gone. The annotated photograph accompanies the opening report; the thread does not provide a measured crack size, welding specification or repair procedure.

The result concerns the exhaust noise

This is the poster’s account of one car’s repair, rather than evidence of a general E92 M3 defect or a welding recommendation for every exhaust rattle. He still listed driveshaft and rod-bearing work as matters to address. His hope for another 85,000-plus miles is not a tested durability result, and the post does not establish that the whole car was free of other faults.
