Mercedes R230 sagging trunk flaps and support replacement reports

NikleinR6 replaced a sagging trunk-flap support although his roof had not failed. Later MBWorld replies describe housing distortion, fit difficulties and cable adjustment, showing why a support swap is not a complete roof diagnosis.

A preventive repair before roof failure

MBWorld member NikleinR6 said his roof had never stopped working. After reading other owners’ accounts, he inspected the trunk flaps and found the passenger-side flap sagging while the driver side was fine. He described a reinforced replacement support supplied as a pair and installed both sides. His reported twenty minutes on the first side and ten on the second are personal job times. His explanation that a low flap might fail to operate a position sensor is a possible mechanism in his account, not a diagnosis established for every roof fault.

Fit, seating and adjustment mattered in later reports

The original description called the job straightforward, but Wettig10 later reported that a new part did not fit well and that he broke the bracket housing the gearing. rsr911 reported filing for cable-drive fit and a working flap afterward. mersue1 and groves73 described flaps that still dropped during roof movement after the support was replaced; groves73 then found that the cable end had not seated fully, while mersue1 pointed to the cable-end adjuster. Sunline also discussed seating, routing and tension adjustment. These are attributed experiences, not instructions to file, hammer or force a mechanism. The first post’s criticism of adjustment screws does not establish that cable-end adjustment is irrelevant.

The thread does not establish one repair for every case

Sunline argued that the updated support could cure the problem without replacing the cable. Other reports differed: veraunc still had a sagging flap after the new part, and BGsBaby described an independent workshop replacing a larger assembly with a different linkage. Those accounts should not be combined into a guaranteed support-only cure. The thread also contains separate SLK and windshield-switch questions, which do not establish the cause of the original R230 flap issue. This review is not a complete roof-support, reset or torque procedure.

Sg45’s separate housing observation

On page two, Sg45 shared this close photograph and described an arc in the housing that, in his view, prevented gear engagement. He said it could look like stripped teeth even though he considered the teeth intact. The image belongs to his contribution, not to NikleinR6’s preventive replacement. It shows a close view of the housing, but does not independently verify its internal condition, the vehicle’s year or part compatibility. His question about ordering the replacement and the reply identifying a part are not a fitment certification.
