Coolant collected below the cover

TechSavvySam found coolant near the front passenger side of the engine on his 2003 996 C2. He initially suspected two hoses, but the replacements he first ordered were incorrect. Coolant was collecting below a small cover, with no moisture above it or visible oil residue. At this point he had not established whether the cover seal or a nearby hose was responsible.

The removed cover already had a rubber seal

The author first wondered whether an updated cover used rubber instead of a paper gasket. After removal, he found that his existing cover already had a rubber seal, which he described as hardened. His later observation qualifies the earlier update speculation; the discussion does not establish a production change or a part-fitment rule.

Cover and three hoses replaced; initial result reported

After reassembly, the author reported that everything seemed to work and that he could see no leaks so far. He thought the cover had been the only leak source, but had also replaced three hoses, one of which he described as dried up. Because those parts were changed together, the report does not isolate the effect of the cover alone. He said his Schwaben vacuum filling tool refilled the partially drained system successfully. The approximately four gallons he removed is his account of this job, not a specified system capacity. No extended follow-up or measured pressure-test result is given.

Replies helped identify the coolant passage

De Jeeper and Idaho911 identified the cover as enclosing a coolant passage. Idaho911 described replacing a similar leaking cover on his own car and receiving a seal with the replacement. dan_189 added a reminder about air entering the system during this work. These are attributed contributions to the diagnosis and refill discussion; their vehicle specifications and proposed parts are not treated as verified fitment for every 996.
