Coolant residue led to the return pipe
After his 996 began dripping coolant, 5CHN3LL cleaned the engine and engine bay, drove the car and inspected it after cooling. He found residue on the coolant return pipe and ordered a replacement. He later reported replacing the pipe. The post does not include a measured leak test or a long-term follow-up interval.
The cracked splice and replacement layout
The author found a brittle, cracked plastic barbed fitting in the removed pipe. It broke further during handling. His photograph pairs the cracked fitting with the replacement assembly, which he described as eliminating the separate splice and a clamp.

Other owners’ pipes and an inspection photograph
The original author questioned whether the barbed splice was original or an earlier repair. Porschetech3 identified it as an original design and said he had seen it crack, including on his own car; cds72911 acknowledged the correction. This attributed exchange does not establish a fleet failure rate. cds72911 said the pipes on his 2000 and 2002 cars had integrated small fittings, while also noting their earlier hose and engine replacements. dporto reported the integrated arrangement on a 1999 car. These histories do not establish a production-year changeover. SoCal911t used a photograph taken during engine-mount work to identify the earlier style on his own car and ordered a replacement. His final reply still described a possible brass splice and wider hose replacement as plans, not completed repairs.
